Rhine-Hesse & The Wonnegau

Wonnegau – the name says it all! Wonne means delight in German and Gau means place - the locals say that Wonnegau is called Wonne-Gau because it is a delight to live there. Wonnegau, the place of delight, a name as picturesque as its landscape. The beauty of the area even features in the Nibelungen saga. Wine production is inextricably linked with the region and Wonnegau has a tradition of wine production stretching back 2000 years to the time of the Romans. For visitors interested in culture, the cathedral city of Worms is worth the journey. As well as the cathedral, the city is an excellent place for a walk around the numerous churches, the synagogue and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe.
